The Barn Coffee Roastery

THE BEGINNINGS OF THE BERLIN ROASTERY THE BARN

Where did the story of coffee with its iconic brown packets and simple house logo begin? In 2008, the founder of the roastery, Ralf Rüller, moved from London to Berlin. In 2008, the world economy was hit by a crisis that called for new beginnings. Moreover, he missed good and above all quality coffee in Berlin. So just two years later, in 2010, he started roasting his own coffee under the brand The Barn. Nowadays, Ralf is mainly responsible for buying green coffee, roasting and inspection.

THE BARN'S APPROACH TO COFFEE AND ROASTING

Coffee at the Barn is roasted on a custom-made ProbatUG 25 roaster . They then use Cropster Roast Profiling software in the roastery to help them keep the quality of the roast. The roastery's policy is to roast only single-origin coffees, so you won't find blends or blends here. This allows them to bring out the individual flavors of the coffee. They do this by using a lighter roast.

DIRECT TRADE COFFEE IS IMPORTANT

As with other roasters of select coffees, you will find the farmer's name on the Barn's coffee packages. Sourcing coffee directly from farmers is very important to them. In most cases, the coffee beans you will find in the packages come from microfarms. The Barn tries to source only the best beans from them, so sometimes it's as little as 20% sometimes up to 60% of production. It depends on the quality of the harvest. To this I can add Ralf's comment that stresses the importance of paying farmers the right amount for their coffee beans. This is the only way they can improve the quality and pay more people.

They also support the freshness of the coffee by buying in smaller batches, which also allows them to have a very varied range of coffees.

UNIQUENESS IN THE BARN COFFEE OFFER

What makes The Barn's coffee offer different? The Barn is no longer a beginner in roasting, so there are a few specialty coffees on their menu. The coffees on their menu come from all over the world. Themost common coffees are from Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya or Honduras.

INSTANT COFFEE THE BARN

However, some of you might be interested in their low caffeine coffee or their selection of instant coffees, which appar ently taste similar to theAmericanocoffee drink . However, it is recommended to use water at 80 °C to preserve the taste.

LOW CAFFEINE COFFEE

Low-caffeine coffee is not chemically modified in any way; it is naturally low in caffeine. It contains roughly half the caffeine of regular arabica, i.e. roughly 0,3-0,7 %.

There are not many instant coffees available. They are no substitute for freshly prepared coffee. However, they are a great choice for travelling, for example, because the coffee powder just needs to be covered with hot water. Source.

THE BARN COFFEE CAPSULES

Another trend of many foreign roasters that you will also find at The Barn are the capsules with select coffee. The reason for including this product in the range is undoubtedly to expand the availability of choice coffee to more people. However, the capsules are only compatible with Nespresso machines.

WHERE CAN YOU FIND THE BARN COFFEE SHOPS?

Thanks to its Berlin origins, we find the roaster's cafés mainly there. And there are not a few of them, we can find eleven of themall over Berlin in the centre and on the outskirts . Each café is different, especially in its interior, which is always inspired by the building in which the café is located. The cafés have a typical minimalist Berlin atmosphere. A visit to Berlin will give you the best idea of what I mean. At the centre of the cafés are the La Marzocco coffee machines and the top-of-the-range Mahlkönig EK43 filter coffee grinders and our much-loved Victoria Arduino espresso grinders . What's more, it's not just the quality of the coffee that's important to The Bar, but also the food.

Now, however, The Barn is no longer just Berlin and you can also find their café inDubaiquite recently .
