How to choose a manual coffee grinder?
For home, office or travel?
For home and office, a grinder with adjustable coarseness is ideal, which can handle espresso and filter coffee, and is comfortable to use. For the car or on the road, choose smaller, lighter grinders with sturdy construction and easy portability, ideally with steel or titanium grinding stones for fast, precise grinding.
What is the difference between steel, ceramic and titanium grinding stones?
Steel grinding stones are faster, more durable and suitable for grinding both espresso and filter coffee. Ceramic stones are quieter and heat up less, which can be better for preserving the flavour of the coffee. Titanium stones are premium, offering extreme durability and longer life, making them suitable for heavy use.
How important is the size of the grinding stones?
The size of the grinding stones affects the speed and consistency of the grind. Larger stones (e.g. 47mm or 48mm) can grind faster and more consistently, making them ideal for espresso. Smaller stones (e.g. 38 mm) are suitable for travel grinders as they are more compact.
Are hand grinders suitable for making espresso?
Yes, many hand grinders, especially those with steel stones and fine coarseness adjustment, are suitable for grinding espresso. However, it is recommended to choose grinders that are designed specifically for this purpose.
