Cabo Verde is a traditional coffee growing location in Brazil. The district has fertile soil which, combined with the altitude and climate, helps farmers to grow quality coffee. In our roastery, we chose the Ponto Alegre farm because of the quality and the possibility of buying coffee directly for Spa Coffee.
Maintaining tradition
For the Sousa family, the grandfather of the current owner started the tradition over 100 years ago. He purchased the Ponto Alegre farm and sought to create the perfect production of proper Brazilian coffee. From the beginning, he thought of his employees and wanted to create a pleasant environment for them, which he continues to do today. Since 1984 the farm has been controlled by the siblings Renato, Eduardo and Mabel Lima de Sousa. Their mission is to preserve tradition, control quality and strive to improve the cultivation of their coffee to the highest level in Brazil. They currently have 36 families working for their farm and recruit approximately 150 temporary workers to help with the harvest.
Space for growing coffee trees
The416 hectares represent the area that the Ponto Alegre farm has. The majority, up to 65% of the total area, is allocated to Mundo Novo, Catucai and Catuai coffee trees. On the remaining land there is wildlife, eucalyptus and a processing station for drying and storing coffee.
Sustainable agriculture
The farm also thinks about sustainability and recycling. There is a modern composting system in operation that produces high-quality fertilizer. The farm gets about 600 tonnes of fertiliser a year and this helps them to get better results. Producing their own fertilizer also helps with up to 40% less chemical application.
