Chamomile essential oil is distilled from the white and yellow flowers of Matricaria grown in the picturesque landscape of Nepal.

Matricaria chamomilla is a small herbaceous annual plant growing to a height of 60-90 cm. Its flowers are in demand in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, which has led to a great interest in cultivating this plant to produce enough raw material to bridge the gap between demand and supply.

During the distillation of Matricaria flowers, one of the components of the essential oil, Matricin (sesquiterpene), is broken down by the heat and pressure of the distillation process into chamazulene with a deep, vivid blue colour.
