VST LAB Coffee III refractometer for coffee and espresso

This high-end handheld digital refractometer is designed for all baristas, professionals in the field of preparing good (not only Brazilian) coffee and espresso. It includes a scale to measure the total dissolved solids percentage %TDS.

The digital refractometer VST LAB Coffee/Espresso III is equipped with a funnel for the measured sample, which is made of high quality stainless steel. The refractometer is also equipped with a hinged funnel cover to prevent water absorption from the air.

It is therefore important to flip this cover over before each measurement, otherwise you may not measure any value at all.

The measuring prism at the bottom of the stainless steel funnel is made of sapphire glass. Sapphire glass is the second hardest substance (after diamond), making it a virtually scratch-proof measuring surface.

The user interface of the VST LAB Coffee/Espresso III digital refractometer consists only of a large backlit, 24-digit, two-line display and two control buttons - "GO" and "MENU". Measurement is therefore intuitive and very easy to understand. The measured value is displayed including the unit. On such a large display, the various information for the individual menu options as well as error messages can be easily displayed.

Calibration

Calibration is carried out with ordinary tap water or distilled water and is a matter of a few seconds.

We recommend that you clean and dry wipe the measuring prism before measuring!

Measurement procedure

As a first step, we strongly recommend that you take a sample of the coffee you have just brewed and place it in another clean cup. This will allow the sample to cool down quickly, which is particularly important to achieve an accurate measurement reading.

Simply drop one or two drops of the cooled coffee or espresso sample onto the measuring optical prism located at the bottom of the stainless steel funnel, cover the lid to prevent air moisture absorption or evaporation, and then press the "GO" button. The measured value in percent TDS is instantly displayed on the refractometer's large display.

Measurement accuracy

Precise measurements with the VST LAB Coffee/Espresso III digital refractometer are ensured by Abbe's optical system in conjunction with a linear sensor array containing 1024 sensing elements.

This sensor design allows repeated measurements with an accuracy of more than ±0.01 %.

The results obtained can therefore be safely compared with those measured with standard benchtop refractometers, which are, however, many times more expensive!

Automatic temperature compensation

The VST LAB Coffee/Espresso III refractometer has built-in non-linear temperature compensation, which guarantees accurate readings at ambient temperatures from 15 °C to 35 °C.
